How To Increase Your Home’s Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficient Home DiagramWhen it comes to owning a home, it's critical that you keep your monthly costs low. From your electric bill to your water bill, spending more than you have to on your bill is simply wasteful.

Fortunately, there are simple ways you can make your home more energy efficient. And, by doing so, you can stash more money in your savings account each month.

Switch Your Lights to Energy Efficient Lights

You've probably heard the benefits choosing more energy efficient lighting. However, you may not have jumped on board. You may think your lights don't use much energy at all, but they do. And over time, your lighting can cost you significantly.

The Consumer Energy Center compared the cost, life, and luminosity between incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs. They found that over the course of three years, you can save over $20 by choosing a 23W compact fluorescent light bulb. Saving $20 may not seem like much. But if you consider that the average household has over 45 light bulb fixtures, then the savings are obvious.

Try More Efficient Cooling Methods

As a homeowner, your heating and cooling costs have a major impact on your energy bills throughout the year. If you're looking to make your home more energy efficient, start with these costs.

The following are a few ways to reduce the heating can cooling costs in your home:

  • Install ceiling fans throughout your home. You can use ceiling fans year-round. Ceiling fans will reduce how often your heating and cooling system turns on.
  • Use blackout curtains. Blackout curtains help block out the sun during the warmer months. They can help you insulate your windows during the winter months.
  • Invest in an energy-efficient HVAC system. Late model HVAC systems are laden with energy-efficient heating and cooling technologies. As such, they will save you money by optimizing usage.
Beyond saving you money, making your home more energy efficient might also help you with your home insurance. With an up-to-date HVAC system, you reduce your odds of filing a claim for damage caused by a dated system.

Insulate Your Home

Insulating your home will help you reduce energy consumption. A well-insulated home will keep comfortable air inside your home. That way, your system doesn't have to switch on too many times throughout the day. You should insulate your windows and doors in your home to prevent air from escaping. Additionally, insulating the pipes to will help you save on energy consumption.
